Manhattan was so beautiful that indigenous inhabitants and European settlers alike considered it to be Paradise on Earth. Though we generally think of New York City as a completely urbanized environment, we still have bats in Washington Square Park, harbor seals and beavers in the rivers, and coyotes in Central Park.When Bobby and Violet, the first Bobst Library Red-tailed Hawk pair, took up residence in President Sexton's window and captured hearts on the Hawkcam, they brought with them the ghost of this lost paradise and inspired us to reconsider the relationship between humans and the wild here in NYC.

Hurricane Sandy destroyed much of New York’s coastline. Many communities continue to reel from the after shock of the unprecedented storm surge. Harmattan’s performance Far Rockaway is a communal reclamation of a neighborhood vulnerable to the sea.
