Film Series at Pratt: Come Join!

Ann Holder will screen Banished: American Ethnic Cleansings. There will be refreshments and a discussion of the film to follow. The screening is at 5 pm in the Alumni Reading Room at Pratt Institute.

Banished: American Ethnic Cleansings Synopsis:

Between the 1870s and 1920s a number of U.S. towns purged a portion of their residents and seized their lands. Those driven out were African-Americans, and many of these locales remain virtually all white today. Award-winning filmmaker Marco Williams follows the descendants of those who were expelled as they try to come to terms with their dislocated past and seek a measure of reparation.

Hoarding, or Adventures in Form: A Talk With Greg Horowitz

BFA Visual & Critical Studies at SVA presents an evening with Gregg Horowitz, professor of philosophy at Pratt Institute. Horowitz will discuss the formal adventures of hoarding: the compulsive inability to discard possessions. To what extent can the hoarder’s melding of overvaluation and indifference cast light on artistic practices that strive to save things from the esteem and disesteem characteristic of standard hierarchies of value? Artists discussed will include Alighiero e Boetti, Agnes Martin, and Paul McCarthy.

The evening will conclude with a brief Q&A.

Student Show: Simulated Interior

Critical & Visual Studies' very own Rebekah Leigh Cione curated a show titled Simulated Interior.

"Simulated Interior is a group show featuring sculptures by Enrique Garcia, Turner Cain, and Alex Berns.

Given the decontextualized nature of the white walled gallery, the exhibit replicates the absurdity of suburban comfort in an alienating mise-en-scène fashion.

Through misanthropic comedy and surrealistic gestures, everyday household objects are distanced from the mundanity of their intended use. Due to their explicit rejection of utilitarian purpose, the familiar forms mock the vain conceits of late capitalism.

The exhibit operates as a dialogue between the object and the viewer; asking questions concerning idealism, individualism, and tradition."

Bob Gooding-Williams will speak to us next week about his book project on Martin Delany, the so-called father of black nationalism. Before reading the paper, he will spend a little time reviewing some of his earlier work on the history of Af-Am political thought and its relevance to critical race theory.

Robert Gooding-Williams is the M. Moran Weston/Black Alumni Council Professor of African-American Studies and Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, where he directs the Center for Race, Philosophy, and Social Justice. Gooding-Williams is the author of three books: Zarathustra’s Dionysian Modernism (Stanford, 2001); Look, A Negro! (Routledge, 2005), and In the Shadow of Du Bois(Harvard, 2009). His areas of research and teaching interest include Social and Political Philosophy, the History of African-American Political Thought, 19th Century European Philosophy, Existentialism, and Aesthetics.

*NEW* Social Justice/Social Practice Minor at Pratt

The Social Justice/Social Practice Minor is designed to enable undergraduate students to bring critical and transformative perspectives to their studio and design practice, their fields of specialization at Pratt, and their studies in liberal arts and sciences. It draws from courses across the Institute, providing students with an interdisciplinary perspective on social justice and social practice studies with an emphasis upon melding theory and practice. In the minor, students will move from identifying social inequities, to the analysis of structural injustices, and the articulation of possible interventions. Interested students should contact Caitlin Cahill (ccahill@pratt.edu) and Ann Holder (aholder@pratt.edu).

The Symposium Series Presents: Johanna Oksala

Please join us on Tuesday November 28, from 5:30- 7:30 in the Alumni Reading Room for our next speaker in the Symposium Series! Johanna Oksala will be giving her presentation titled "Feminism Against Bio-capitalism." 

Her paper "discusses the growth of bio-capitalism and analyzes its political consequences through the case study of commercial gestational surrogacy." She will touch on works by both Melinda Cooper and Catherine Waldby to form a philosophical framework keen to confront ethical issues surrounding the commercialization of bodies. 

Oksala is a Academy of Finland Research fellow in the Department of Philosophy, History, Culture. and Art Studios at university of Helsinki. She is also an associate professor of Environmental Philosophy at Pratt Institute.

Josiah Brownell will be sharing two draft chapters of his new manuscriptproject: "States of Denial: Katanga, Rhodesia, and Transkei and the Limits
of Africa Self-Determination." These chapters will examine the complex
relationships between these three failed, right-wing African independence
bids; the transatlantic racial networks they tapped into; and uncover the
many layers of meaning behind the sometimes bizarre aesthetic performances
of their national independence day commemorations.

Another Pratt Philosopher on the "De-Pathologizing of Trumpism"

Why do liberal critics of Trump and Trumpism feel they can comfortably use the language of idiocy, pathology, and ‘brain defects’ to describe their opponents?

Pratt philosopher and teacher in Social Science and Cultural Studies Dan Boscov-Ellen has written a piece exposing the smugness of these self-ordained (and elitist) ‘phrenologists’. It’s called ‘Against the New Phrenology: De-Pathologizing Trump’ and it has just appeared in the online journal ‘The Disorder of Things’ (November 2). Link here.

Boscov-Ellen says to the liberals, look at the brutal, unsustainable and racist world that neoliberalism has made before you let your own ideology off the hook,

Dan is a PhD student in Philosophy at the New School for Social Research. His dissertation explores the political-philosophical relationships of capitalist ecological crisis. He also teaches ethics and social issues as well as environmental ethics at Pratt Institute.

Pratt Philosopher on Climate War Rhetoric

Eric Godoy, assistant chairperson of Social Science and Cultural Studies, published a piece written with Aaron Jaffe today in the New York Times Philosophy Blog, "The Stone." The op-ed questions the effectiveness of using war rhetoric for mobilizing a response to climate change. It suggests instead a "green revolution": "Climate change demands not only a race to develop and deploy new energy technologies, but a revolution to democratize all forms of power — fossil fuels, wind, solar, but most important, economic and political power."

New School Talk: "Empathy & Action: A Subjective Discussion of Simone Weil’s Legacy"

Please join us Monday, November 14, 2016 at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the New School for a talk.

"In an age where worldwide suffering is more visible than ever in human history, we are all inclined to feel empathy on a daily basis. But does that mean that we are able to spin this emotion into effective action? Can empathy trigger, fuel, even inform such action, or may it actually hinder it? These are a few of the questions we are inspired to ask ourselves by the life and commitment of philosopher and activist Simone Weil (1909-1943), who devoted her short existence to both raising awareness through empathy and engaging in transformative action on all scales, from individual to social and political.
The upcoming performance of Kaija Saariaho’s oratorio La Passion de Simone, featuring Mannes students, artists of the French collective La Chambre aux échos and the International Contemporary Ensemble, marks the perfect occasion to discuss these themes through the scope of art and other topical and living ramifications, along with four engaging scholars from contrasting backgrounds who have all been strongly influenced by Weil’s body of work."
