Bob Gooding-Williams will speak to us next week about  his book project on Martin Delany, the so-called father of black nationalism.  Before reading the paper, he will spend a little time reviewing some of his earlier work on the history of Af-Am political thought and its relevance to critical race theory.   

 Robert Gooding-Williams is the M. Moran Weston/Black Alumni Council Professor of African-American Studies and Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, where he directs the Center for Race, Philosophy, and Social Justice.  Gooding-Williams is the author of three books: Zarathustra’s Dionysian Modernism (Stanford, 2001); Look, A Negro! (Routledge, 2005), and In the Shadow of Du Bois(Harvard, 2009).  His areas of research and teaching interest include Social and Political Philosophy, the History of African-American Political Thought, 19th Century European Philosophy, Existentialism, and Aesthetics.

I am happy to announce that the new Bard in Berlin program is open to Critical and Visual Studies students who would like to study abroad during the summer, fall or spring terms.

"The program is based in artistic practice, including studio arts, performance, media, and the interplay among them. History and theory courses take an interdisciplinary approach to draw upon the wealth of Berlin's museums, monuments, galleries, performances, and non-traditional venues."

The courses offered are invigorating and well designed to fit in with the aims of Pratt's degree.

They offer courses such as:

Landscape, Land Art, and the City

Social Choreography and the Politics of the Public Sphere

 Talking Identities: The Art of Brendan Fernandes

Bio: Born in Kenya of Indian descent, Brendan Fernandes immigrated to Canada in 1989. He completed the Independent Study Program of the Whitney Museum of American Art (2007) and earned his MFA (2005) from The University of Western Ontario and his BFA (2002) from York University in Canada. He has exhibited internationally and nationally including exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum, Museum of Art and Design New York, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, The National Gallery of Canada, The Art Gallery of Hamilton, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Mass MoCA, The Andy Warhol Museum, the Art Gallery of York University, Deutsche Guggenheim, The Bergen Kunsthall , Manif d’Art: The Quebec City Biennial, The Third Guangzhou Triennial and the Western New York Biennial through The Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Fernandes has participated in numerous residency programs including The Canada Council for the Arts International Residency in Trinidad and Tobago (2006), The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Work Space (2008) and Swing Space (2009) programs, and invitations to the Gyeonggi Creation Center at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Korea (2009) and ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany (2011). He was the recipient of a New Commissions Project through Art in General, NY (2010) and was the Ontario representative for the Sobey Art Award (2010). Fernandes is based between Toronto and New York.
