Josiah Brownell will be sharing two draft chapters of his new manuscriptproject: "States of Denial: Katanga, Rhodesia, and Transkei and the Limits
of Africa Self-Determination." These chapters will examine the complex
relationships between these three failed, right-wing African independence
bids; the transatlantic racial networks they tapped into; and uncover the
many layers of meaning behind the sometimes bizarre aesthetic performances
of their national independence day commemorations.
