The 9th Annual Wallabout Film Festival: For Students, By Students
Save the Date: Thursday, April 20
Kickstarter Campaign Deadline: Friday, March 31

Since 2009, students from Brooklyn, NY’s Pratt Institute have organized the annual Wallabout Film Festival, an event that showcases student short films from the Pratt community, other New York City area schools, and institutions from around the world. This year’s event, the 9th Annual Wallabout Film Festival, will take place the evening of Thursday, April 20 at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Wallabout has its origins in Pratt’s Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies. Each Spring, up to a dozen students, representing a range of majors, enroll in the department’s Film Festivals: Theory & Practice course to learn about the history, role, and impact of film festivals within the larger film industry and film culture as a whole. Lectures from instructor and film festival veteran Basil Tsiokos (Sundance, DOC NYC, Nantucket), class discussions, and film industry/filmmaker guests provide a framework and context for students to organize Wallabout as the class’ final project for the semester.

Students are tasked with creating the event from start to finish. Working within groups, they research potential screening venues and negotiate terms to hold the event; solicit, review, and select film submissions; promote the event on social media and by designing posters and brochures; organize crowdfunding campaigns and solicit donations to help fund the festival; and host the Wallabout Film Festival, a screening of short student films attended by filmmakers, featuring awards decided by both an industry jury and the audience, and an afterparty.

Ticket information and advance ticket sales via Eventbrite will be available early next month.

Wallabout’s Kickstarter campaign runs through Friday, March 31, with a goal of raising $2000 to help cover the costs of organizing the event. For more information, to contribute, or to help spread the word:
