Pratt Institute’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences invites applications for Chair of the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies effective July 1, 2016.

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Chair of the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies (SSCS) oversees the Department's curriculum, is an advocate for his or her faculty in the School and the Institute, and is in charge of the day-to-day operations of a vibrant, collegial, and interdisciplinary Department of 16 full-time and approximately 45 part-time faculty.

The Department's faculty represents a large number of disciplines and diverse interdisciplinary fields, including: history, cultural studies, philosophy, sociology, urban studies, political theory, psychology, anthropology, and sustainability studies. The Department offers a BA in Critical and Visual Studies, and four minors: Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Sustainability Studies, and Psychology. In addition to housing the required World History sequence as part of the general education requirements that every student must take, SSCS offers a range of electives reflecting the Department's interdisciplinary breadth. Faculty members in the Department are in the process of developing more undergraduate minors as well as new interdisciplinary graduate programs. The new Chair must be able to articulate a vision that embraces the multiple talents of his or her faculty and the wide range of possibilities for curricular and program development.

The successful candidate will be at home in an interdisciplinary department, and demonstrate a coherent philosophy of leadership reflecting a healthy respect for faculty collaboration and input. The Chair will also work to foster good relations with other offices and departments of the Institute and will serve on divisional and Institute-wide committees.

Pratt is an internationally recognized school of architecture, art, design, and information science, which draws students from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. The Institute is located on a 25-acre campus in the historic Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Chair's responsibilities will include: supervising the Assistant Chair and the Assistant to the Chair; appointing and supervising the program coordinators, overseeing teaching assignments and course scheduling; overseeing faculty recruitment, evaluation, and development; convening Department faculty meetings; overseeing curricular development; administering the Department’s budget; undertaking divisional and Institute committee service as assigned by the Dean; and carrying out special projects and assume all other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have a Ph.D in a relevant field, and must have experience as chair or similar position that demonstrates his or her experience in managing budgets, hiring and promotion of faculty, and leading an academic unit. Demonstrated strong administrative and interpersonal skills are essential.

SALARY is commensurate with education and experience.
