Since 2009, students from Brooklyn, NY’s Pratt Institute have organized the annual Wallabout Film Festival, an event that showcases student short films from the Pratt community, other New York City area schools, and institutions from around the world. This year’s event, the 9th Annual Wallabout Film Festival, will take place the evening of Thursday, April 20 at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Wallabout has its origins in Pratt’s Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies. Each Spring, up to a dozen students, representing a range of majors, enroll in the department’s Film Festivals: Theory & Practice course to learn about the history, role, and impact of film festivals within the larger film industry and film culture as a whole. Lectures from instructor and film festival veteran Basil Tsiokos (Sundance, DOC NYC, Nantucket), class discussions, and film industry/filmmaker guests provide a framework and context for students to organize Wallabout as the class’ final project for the semester.

Students are tasked with creating the event from start to finish. Working within groups, they research potential screening venues and negotiate terms to hold the event; solicit, review, and select film submissions; promote the event on social media and by designing posters and brochures; organize crowdfunding campaigns and solicit donations to help fund the festival; and host the Wallabout Film Festival, a screening of short student films attended by filmmakers, featuring awards decided by both an industry jury and the audience, and an afterparty.

Between the 1870s and 1920s a number of U.S. towns purged a portion of their residents and seized their lands. His use of color film in the late 1970s and early 1980s, at a time when British photography was dominated by traditional black-and-white social documentary had a revolutionizing effect on the genre, causing a new school of color photography to emerge. In 1981, Graham completed his first acclaimed work by photographing life along England’s primary arterial road in a series of color photographs entitled <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">A1: The Great North Road<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">. In 2011, The Museum of Modern Art acquired the complete set of prints that Graham had originally used to print his first book in 1983. Over the past three decades, Graham has traveled widely, producing 13 distinct bodies of work that include <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">Beyond Caring<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (1984–1985), <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">Empty Heaven<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (1989–1995), <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">Ceasefire<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (6–8 April 1994), <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">End of the Age <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">(1996–1998), <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">American Night<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (1998–2002), <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">a shimmer of possibility<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (2004–2006), <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">The Present<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (2011), and <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">Does Yellow Run Forever?<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (2011– 2014). Graham has published a dedicated monograph for nearly every series of work, most famously his twelve-volume collection titled <em style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">a shimmer of possibility<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lucida sans unicode", "lucida grande", sans-serif; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"> (co-published with steidlMACK), which was honored with the 2011 Paris Photo Book Prize for the most important photography book published in the past 15 years. Graham is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the 2009 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the 2012 Hasselblad Foundation International Award. His work is included in public collections around the world including The Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Gallery, National Museum of Photography, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as in private collections internationally. He studied at Wesleyan University, the California Institute of the Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program. For more than two decades he has cultivated a diverse artistic practice ranging from photographic media, collage, installation and performance. His work explores intersections between the personal and the political, examining the impact of ethnicity, gender and desire on the contemporary social and cultural dynamic. Known for his self-portraits and use of pop culture icons (such as Billie Holiday and Michael Jackson), Harris teases the viewers’ perceptions and expectations, resignifying cultural cursors and recalibrating the familiar with the extraordinary. Harris has exhibited work widely including at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and The Whitney Museum of American Art, among many others, as well as at international biennials including São Paulo, 2016; Busan, 2008; Venice, 2007; Seville, 2006; and Gwangju, 2000. His work is represented in the permanent collections of major museums, most recently The Museum of Modern Art. In 2014, Harris joined the Board of Trustees of the American Academy in Rome and was the recipient of the David C. Driskell Prize by the High Museum of Art. In 2016, he was awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and was appointed as a trustee of the Tiffany Foundation. Harris is currently an associate professor of Art and Art Education at New York University.
